It's Whatever the Last Court Says It Is

Nick Anderson, 7/4/12:
A fee levied on an individual for failing to follow the law is always a tax, silly presidential candidates!

What do they call it when your car has a broken headlight and a cop catches you?

Or when you "underpay" on your income tax and the IRS finds out?

Or your company dumps chemicals in a place it shouldn't and the DEP cracks down on you?

All of those are taxes, right?

  1. I kind of like this one. Sure, it's vulnerable to the criticisms you made, but the Court did call it a tax and the two candidates did fall over themselves denying that it was true. I think some aspect of the situation was pretty accurately parodied, there.
