Summon Bigger Fish

Clay Bennett, 5/12/11:

Or, as I like to steal from Terry Pratchett, "Give a man a fire and he'll be warm for the night, but set a man on fire and he'll be warm for the rest of his life."

I don't see what that has to do with this cartoon, though -- these men clearly know how to fish, so, logically, they should eat for a lifetime. Perhaps the proverb is defective?

  1. Give someone a hand-out and he'll always depend on hand-outs. Give him the tools to get what he needs himself, and he'll get a job and take care of himself. Unless there are no jobs because the economy's dead in the water...

I read it as a pointed jab against the insistence that the unemployed will pull themselves up by their bootstraps if we just practice tough love and cut off their benefits.
